New research published in journal Accident Analysis and Prevention revealed individuals who have experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) could be at an increased risk for road rage. Data has shown that drivers who display aggressive behavior while behind the wheel were more likely to be involved in a car accident. Studies have already established a correlation between car accidents and substance abuse and/or psychological issues; therefore, the goal of this study was to determine if there was a link between an individual who has experienced a traumatic brain injury and aggressive car accidents.

Canadian researchers interviewed 4, 000 adult drivers from ages 18-97 and reviewed their driving history. The study defined aggressive driving as making threats to harm drivers or occupants and damaging another vehicle. In addition, for the purpose of this study, traumatic brain injury was defined as a head injury that caused the individual to lose consciousness for at least five minutes or required overnight hospitalization. The study revealed that individuals who had at least one traumatic brain injury reported significantly higher instances of serious aggressive driving. Moreover, individuals with a history of TBI were more likely to be involved in a car accident, which caused injury to themselves, passengers, and damage to the vehicle.

While the study found an association between traumatic brain injury and aggressive driving behavior, researchers reported that it is too early in the analysis to state that there is causal relationship. The data did reveal that a significant number of individuals have experienced traumatic brain injuries; therefore it is important to understand how head trauma affects driving behavior. Researchers discussed that although driving is frequently perceived as a simple activity, it actually requires concentration and multiple cognitive processes, and understanding the impact of head injury on traffic accidents and road rage could help improve driving safety.
