Midsized SUVs Fared Poorly in U.S. Crash Test

The U.S. nonprofit group, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), recently released the results of their testing of mid-sized sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in small overlap front crash tests.  A small overlap front crash test is considered, by industry experts, to be a tougher test than a straight head on collision test.

This crash test involves a collision at the front corner of a vehicle, as opposed to the full front of a vehicle, as in most head-on crash tests.  This test is important to examine how a vehicle will perform in the less protected corners and edges of a vehicle.  Typically crashes of this type will impact the front wheel, the suspension system, and the firewall.  When these areas are the main impact area and perform poorly, serious leg and foot injuries can occur.

The study examined seven vehicles classified as mid-sized SUVs and found none of them performed well.  This table lists the IIHS’s results in alphabetical order by vehicle make and model with the corresponding test results:

Vehicle Make                      Vehicle Model                                Test Results

Dodge                                       Durango                                           marginal

Dodge                                       Journey                                            poor

Fiat Chrysler                             Cherokee                                          marginal

Fiat Chrysler                             4-door Jeep Wrangler                        good

Ford                                          Flex                                                 acceptable

Hyundai                                    Santa Fe                                          marginal

Nissan                                       Murano                                            good

As the table illustrates, none of the vehicles rated well and the majority rated poorly.  Of all the vehicles, the Dodge Journey had the lowest rating, while the Fiat Chrysler 4-door Jeep Wrangler and the Nissan Murano garnered the highest ratings of the group.
