Most Congested Roadways in America

Every driver and passenger on American highways has experienced the frustrations associated with sitting in traffic as their car slowly makes their way through congested off-ramps and bottlenecks. This not only causes stress and tension for those trying to reach their destinations, it also poses other dangers as distracted drivers reach for cell phones to explain why they are going to be late for work, school, appointments or deliveries.

Overcrowded highways pose a myriad of problems not only for industries, but for the general public as well. High volume traffic and delays create pollution, cost money and are often the cause of car accidents which can result in injuries or death.

A 2015 study by the Highway Users Alliance revealed that Philadelphia’s Vine Street and Schuylkill Expressways made the top 50 list of the most heavily congested roads in the country. It was estimated that these two expressways, alone are causing an approximate 300,000 hours of delay each year. This equates to nearly six million dollars in lost time and well over 100,000 gallons of fuel burned while drivers sit in traffic. Part of the problem stems from the fact that the highways were constructed over 60 years ago and do not meet the demands of modern travel. Although some projects are being developed, Pennsylvania lawmakers have yet to aggressively attempt to fix the problems on the overcrowded roadways.

The study referenced above, “Unclogging America’s Arteries 2015,” also points out that road congestion across the county is a growing problem that must be addressed in order to make highways safer for the millions of people who travel them each day. At this point in time, congress is finalizing a bill aimed at addressing the overcrowded roadways across America.
